01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Beneath Waseda University’s International House of Literature (The Haruki Murakami Library) is 橙子猫 (Orange Cat), a café tucked into the basement. Surrounded by books and the gentle sound of jazz, it’s an easygoing place to enjoy carefully brewed coffee and a light meal.
Fragrant toasted sandwiches and a generous lunch menu
A fragrant toasted sandwich is a tempting reason to make a meal of it. In the tomato, cheese and basil toasted sandwich, the cheese melts between crisp-toasted slices of bread, joined by the tang of fresh tomato and the cool, fresh notes of basil. Other options for a more filling meal include a sandwich with soft, fluffy egg, a generous serving of taco rice and tarako spaghetti made rich with cream.
Sweets made to pair with coffee
Sweets are another appealing choice between a stroll and a cup of tea. A sugar-glazed doughnut pairs a soft, simply sweet dough with the pleasant bitterness of hand-dripped coffee or an Americano. Coffee features in several other desserts: an original tiramisu layered with coffee-soaked sponge and rich cream, a smooth coffee jelly parfait, and Coffee Vanilla Kintoki, served with vanilla ice cream and chunky red bean paste, with coffee poured over the top.
A drink for every mood
There’s more than coffee to choose from, including the café’s namesake cream soda, Orange Cat, and a two-berry soda with a bright, fruity lift. The frozen espresso crush balances espresso’s bitterness with the sweetness of whipped cream and cookies; there are also various lattes and seasonal teas to suit the moment. With free Wi-Fi and terrace seating, the café offers a calm place to spend time alone, whether reading or stopping in before or after seeing an exhibition.
